Fall 2013
Dear Parent or Guardian of a PHS student taking German,
I will be taking PHS students to Hamburg-Germany in June-July 2015, on a GAPP exchange (German American Partnership Program) and a chaperone. I would like to have an initial meeting to provide more information about our trip in May 2014.
The PHS students will be hosted in German families that all go to the same high school. We spend 3 weeks in Hamburg, going to school and taking 3 or 4 daytrips to nearby cities like Bremen, Lübeck, and the North Sea. We then go to Germany’s capital Berlin for 4 days. The dates we are looking at righ after school ends in 2015. The German students will then come to Philomath and live with Philomath families the last week of September 2015, stay 3 weeks, and then visit San Francisco and Seattle for a few days each.
In the past, the trip has cost about $2,900, including plane ticket, train/bus transportation, food during excursions and hostel in Berlin, Dresden and Munich (it was $2500 if only going to Hamburg and Berlin). The only extra cost during the whole trip would be a small amount of pocket money.
To organize the trip, PHS collaborates with The German American Partnership Program (GAPP). It is a non-profit high school exchange program between schools in Germany and the United States, sponsored by the German Foreign Office and by the US Department of State. The main objective of the Program is the integration of students into everyday life of host families and into classroom activities of host schools to provide them with a coherent intercultural experience.
I strongly encourage you to consider this opportunity for your child. During the meeting in May, we will discuss this trip and consider fundraising opportunities. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about this exciting opportunity ([email protected] or 541-929-4367).
I look forward to meeting you. Students who hope to go on this trip should attend as well, if possible.
Respectfully,
Babette Grunwald
